Vienna International Airport (48° 6′ 39″ N, 16° 34′ 15″ E) is the international airport of Vienna, Austria. It is located in Schwechat, 18 km southeast of Vienna and 57 km west of Bratislava. Its designated field elevation is 183 m above mean sea level.
Heavily impacted by the collapse of air traffic in the COVID-19 pandemic, VIE handled only 7’812’938 passengers, 95’880 aircraft movements, and 217’888 metric tons of cargo in 2020. In 2019, VIE handled 75.3% more passengers, 64.4% more aircraft movements, and 23.2% more cargo.
Austria’s largest airport operates regular scheduled and charter flights to numerous international destinations mainly in Europe, in addition to Asia, North America, and Africa.
Vienna International Airport serves as a hub for Austrian Airlines. It also serves as a focus city for Eurowings, Ryanair, Wizz Air, and Korean Air Cargo.
Vienna International Airport Infrastructure
VIE has four terminal buildings: Terminal 1, Terminal 1A opposite to Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and Terminal 3. Terminal 3 houses the central arrivals hall for all terminals. The terminal buildings 1, 2, and 3 connect to the five concourses: B, C, D, F, and G.
Turkish Airlines, in addition to some Oneworld and SkyTeam airlines members, use Terminal 1. Terminal 1A, on the other hand, hosts check-in facilities for several low-cost carriers. Terminal 2 is currently closed pending refurbishment. Austrian Airlines Group, most Star Alliance members, ANA, Emirates, El Al, Korean Air, Royal Jordanian, Thai Airways, and Qatar Airways use Terminal 3. Terminal 3, the newest facility with adjoining concourses F and G, is known as the Austrian Star Alliance Terminal.
VIE is equipped with two asphalt runways: 11/29 and 16/34. Runway 11/29 is 3’500 m long. Runway 16/34 is 3’600 m long.
Ground Transportation at Vienna International Airport
The airport is adjacent to motorway A4, leading from central Vienna to Budapest. Taxis and car rental facilities are available VIE. Buses also operate from the airport to several destinations in Vienna and other cities like Bratislava, Budapest, and Brno.
The Vienna S-Bahn line S7 provides local service to the city center within 25 minutes. The City Airport Train, however, connects the airport directly to Wien Mitte railway station, close to the city center, within 16 minutes.
